Phoenix, Arizona
Conceived of as a self sufficient community where residents live, work, shop, recreate all within a short walking distance; the village is a zero-commute / minimal carbon footprint model for the future. Environmentally responsive, the scheme makes use of the existing canal to create pools for cooling; and provides verandahs, roofs and trees for shading; creating a soothing oasis in the desert climate with minimal cost. The plan weaves urban space, waterways, parks, with the central boulevard in a lucid tapestry that is both coherent and rich. It is a scaffold on the urban scale that allows infill with urban buildings of similar type but with differing expression.
